Pinterest Secret Boards Explained — Create, Share, and Un-Secret Them (2026)

Secret boards are Pinterest's answer to a simple problem: sometimes you want to save things without anyone seeing them. Gift ideas, a wedding you haven't announced, a business plan, or just a board of things you'd rather not explain. Pinterest has supported them for years, but the rules about who sees what, and what happens when you change a board's visibility, still confuse people.

This guide covers how secret boards work in 2026, including the parts Pinterest's own help article skips over.

What a Secret Board Is (and Isn't)

A secret board is a board that only you and people you explicitly invite can see. Specifically:

  • It doesn't appear on your profile.
  • It doesn't appear in search results, for the board or for the pins on it.
  • Pins you save to it don't show up in your followers' home feeds.
  • It has a lock icon next to its name in your board list.
  • Pinterest doesn't use secret-board pins to recommend content to other users.

What it isn't:

  • It's not encrypted or hidden from Pinterest. Pinterest's systems can still see the content and apply their policies to it. Pinterest's privacy policy explains what it collects regardless of board visibility.
  • It's not private from collaborators. Anyone you invite sees everything on it, including pins you saved before inviting them.
  • It doesn't hide the original pin. If you save a public pin to a secret board, the pin still exists publicly wherever it came from. You've hidden your save, not the pin.

How to Create a Secret Board

On desktop:

  1. Go to your profile and click the + button, then Board.
  2. Enter a name.
  3. Toggle Keep this board secret on.
  4. Click Create.

In the app:

  1. Tap your profile, then the + icon, then Board.
  2. Name it.
  3. Turn on Secret.
  4. Tap Create.

The board gets a lock icon. From now on, any pin you save to it is hidden along with the board.

How to Make an Existing Board Secret

You can flip any board you own to secret at any time:

  1. Open the board.
  2. Click or tap the pencil (Edit) icon.
  3. Toggle Secret on.
  4. Save.

What happens to the board's followers: they lose access immediately and aren't notified. If you later make the board public again, previous followers are not automatically restored. This is the part most people don't expect, so think before making a popular board secret.

Group boards with other contributors can't be made secret by a single collaborator; only the board owner can change visibility.

Inviting Collaborators to a Secret Board

Secret doesn't mean solo. You can invite specific people:

  1. Open the board and tap the + Invite or Collaborators button near the top.
  2. Search for a Pinterest user by name or paste their profile link, or generate an invite link.
  3. Send.

Invited people can see and save to the board once they accept. They can't invite others unless you enable that in the board settings. If you remove a collaborator, they lose access immediately, but any pins they added stay on the board.

The invite-link option is convenient but treat the link like a password: anyone who has it can join.

Un-Secreting a Board

To make a secret board public:

  1. Open the board, tap Edit.
  2. Toggle Secret off.
  3. Save.

Everything on the board becomes visible on your profile and in search at once. Pins you saved to it will not retroactively be pushed into your followers' feeds, but the board itself will appear on your profile.

A common workflow is to build a board in secret, then reveal it when it's ready: a launch, a finished renovation, a holiday gift guide. That works fine, and it's a good way to draft content for Pinterest SEO without a half-empty board showing publicly.

Secret Boards vs Archived Boards

Pinterest also lets you archive a board. Archived boards are different:

Secret boardArchived board
Visible on profileNoNo (moved to an Archived section only you see)
Can you add pinsYesNo, until unarchived
Pinterest uses it for recommendationsNoNo
PurposeOngoing private savingFinished board you want to keep but not display

Archive is for a board you're done with. Secret is for one you're still using. If you're cleaning up an account, our guide on deleting pins and boards compares archiving with deleting.

Can Anyone Find a Secret Board?

Not through Pinterest. Secret boards don't have public URLs that work for non-members, they're excluded from search, and they don't appear in "more like this" suggestions.

There are two indirect leaks worth knowing about:

  • Collaborators' activity. If a collaborator saves a pin from your secret board to one of their public boards, that pin is now public on their profile. The original secret board stays hidden, but the content has escaped.
  • Shared screenshots. Obvious, but it's how most "secret" content leaks.

Pinterest doesn't show who views a board, secret or public. Our privacy guide covers what activity Pinterest does and doesn't expose.

Downloading From a Secret Board

Because secret boards have no public access, most third-party tools can't reach them by URL. But if you're a member of the board, you're viewing the pins normally, and each pin has a normal pin URL. Copy that URL and paste it into PinLoad to download the image or video. This works because the download reads the pin, not the board.

For saving a whole secret board, use the one-at-a-time or extension methods in our board download guide. The official data export also includes your secret boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my followers see when I save to a secret board?

No. Nothing about a secret board, including your saves to it, appears in anyone's feed.

Do secret boards count toward my pin totals?

Your profile shows a public pin count that excludes secret boards. Pinterest's internal analytics still track them.

Can I make a section of a board secret?

No. Visibility is set per board, not per section. To hide part of a board, move those pins to a separate secret board.

Is there a limit to how many secret boards I can have?

Pinterest doesn't publish a limit, and in practice people run dozens without issues. There used to be a cap of a few secret boards years ago, but it was removed.

Will making a board public notify my followers?

No notification is sent. The board just starts appearing on your profile.

Can a secret board still get a violation notice?

Yes. Pinterest's community guidelines apply to all content it hosts, and secret boards are reviewed the same way. See our guide on Pinterest violation notices.
