How to Post a Video on Pinterest — Specs, Upload Steps, and Why Uploads Fail (2026)

Video pins get more reach on Pinterest than static images, and Pinterest has spent the last two years making sure of it. The home feed now weights video heavily, and video pins are the format Pinterest's own creator program pushes. If you make content and you're not posting video, you're leaving distribution on the table.
The upload itself is easy. The hard parts are getting the file right so Pinterest doesn't reject it or crush its quality, and understanding what happens after you press Publish. This guide covers both, on desktop and in the app.
Before You Upload: The 2026 Video Specs
Pinterest publishes its requirements on the product specs page. The numbers that matter:
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| File type | MP4, MOV, or M4V |
| Video codec | H.264 or H.265 |
| Audio codec | AAC |
| Max file size | 2 GB |
| Length | 4 seconds to 15 minutes |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 recommended; 1:1 and 2:3 accepted |
| Resolution | 1080 × 1920 px for 9:16 |
| Frame rate | 24 to 30 fps |
A file that meets all of these uploads without trouble. Most rejections come from one of three problems: a codec Pinterest doesn't support (usually ProRes or a screen-recording codec), a video under 4 seconds, or a horizontal 16:9 file that technically uploads but displays with big empty bars. Our image size guide covers the reasoning behind the ratios.
Export settings that work everywhere: H.264, AAC audio, 1080 × 1920, 30 fps, 8 to 12 Mbps bitrate. CapCut, iMovie, Premiere, and DaVinci Resolve all have a preset that matches this; look for "Vertical 1080p" or "Social media 9:16".
How to Post a Video From the App
- Open Pinterest and tap the + button at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Pin.
- Choose the video from your camera roll. Pinterest shows a trim tool; drag the handles if you want to shorten it.
- Tap Next.
- Pick a cover frame by scrubbing the timeline, or upload a separate cover image. The cover is what shows in the grid before the video plays, so pick a frame that reads clearly as a still.
- Add a title (up to 100 characters) and description (up to 500). Keywords go here; see the Pinterest SEO guide.
- Add a link if the video promotes something.
- Choose a board.
- Optionally add tags (up to 10 topic tags) to help distribution.
- Tap Publish.
Pinterest shows "Processing" for anywhere from 30 seconds to 20 minutes depending on length. The pin appears on your board immediately but may show the cover image only until processing finishes.
How to Post a Video From Desktop
- Go to pinterest.com and click Create in the left sidebar (or the + icon in the top-right on some layouts).
- Click Create Pin.
- Drag the video file into the upload area or click to browse.
- Wait for the upload progress bar. Large files take a while; don't close the tab.
- Set the cover frame using the slider under the preview.
- Fill in the title, description, link, and board.
- Click Publish.
Desktop supports larger uploads more reliably than mobile, so if a long video keeps failing on your phone, try the browser.
Choosing a Cover Frame
The cover is the single most important decision after the video itself. In the home feed, Pinterest shows the cover as a still until the user scrolls it into view, and on slow connections it may show the cover the whole time. Rules of thumb:
- Pick a frame with a clear subject and no motion blur.
- If the video has text overlays, choose a frame where the main text is fully visible.
- Avoid the first frame of a fade-in; it's usually black or half-transparent.
- You can upload a separate designed cover (1000 × 1500 px) if none of the frames work.
Adding Text, Music, and Effects
Pinterest's in-app creator has basic tools: text overlays, stickers, and a music library. The music library contains licensed tracks cleared for use on Pinterest. Using a track from it is safe; adding your own copyrighted music in your editor before upload is the fastest way to get a pin removed. Pinterest's community guidelines and copyright policy both cover this, and our copyright guide has more detail.
Text added through the Pinterest app is baked into the video at publish time, so it can't be edited later. If you might want to change it, add text in your editor and re-upload instead.
Why Pinterest Rejects Videos
If you see "This video couldn't be uploaded" or the upload fails silently:
- Under 4 seconds. Pad it or combine clips.
- Unsupported codec. Re-export as H.264 MP4. Check the codec with VLC's Tools → Codec Information or ffprobe.
- Over 2 GB. Lower the bitrate. 1080p at 10 Mbps runs about 75 MB per minute, so 2 GB is roughly 25 minutes; if you're hitting the cap, your bitrate is much higher than needed.
- Variable frame rate. Screen recordings and some phone videos use VFR, which Pinterest sometimes chokes on. Re-export with a constant 30 fps.
- HDR or 10-bit colour. iPhones shoot HDR by default. Pinterest accepts it but the colours can look washed out after transcoding. Exporting to SDR (Rec. 709) gives more predictable results.
- Wrong account type for the feature. Some video features, like link stickers, require a business account.
Why the Video Looks Worse After Upload
Pinterest transcodes every video to its own delivery formats, and the result is always somewhat more compressed than what you uploaded. To minimise the loss:
- Upload at 1080p, not 720p. Pinterest downscales; it never upscales.
- Use a higher bitrate than you think you need. 12 Mbps at 1080p is a good ceiling.
- Avoid heavy grain or noise, which compresses badly.
- Don't upload a file that's already been through another platform's compression. Export fresh from your editor.
If you want to see what Pinterest actually serves after transcoding, download your own published pin with PinLoad and compare it to your source. The video download guide explains the steps.
The Video Is Stuck on "Processing"
Pinterest occasionally leaves a video in processing for hours. What to do:
- Wait 30 minutes. Long videos and busy periods take time.
- Check Pinterest's status; processing delays often coincide with outages.
- If it's still stuck after a few hours, delete the pin and re-upload. Nothing is lost except the title and description, so copy those first.
- If re-uploading also sticks, re-export the file at a lower bitrate and try again.
Scheduling Video Pins
Business accounts can schedule pins up to two weeks ahead from desktop: on the Create Pin screen, click Publish at a later date and pick a time. Scheduling matters more for video than for images because Pinterest's initial distribution window (the first few hours) responds to early engagement, so publish when your audience is online. Your analytics under Audience insights show the days and times.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I post a video on Pinterest without a business account?
Yes. Personal accounts can upload video pins. Business accounts get analytics, scheduling, and some creator features on top.
Can I upload a video from TikTok or Instagram?
Technically yes, but re-posting other platforms' videos with their watermarks is discouraged and reduces distribution. If it's your own content, export the original from your editor rather than downloading it from the other platform. If it's someone else's, you need their permission; see the copyright guide.
How long should a Pinterest video be?
Pinterest's own guidance favours 6 to 15 seconds for the feed, with longer videos working for tutorials. The 15-minute maximum exists but very few pins use it.
Why is my video silent after upload?
Either the export had no audio track or Pinterest muted it on playback (the default). Tap the speaker icon on the pin. If there's no speaker icon, the file had no audio. Our no-sound troubleshooting guide covers both cases.
Can I edit a video pin after publishing?
You can edit the title, description, link, board, and cover. You cannot replace the video file. To change the video, delete the pin and upload a new one.
