Pinterest Image Sizes 2026 — Pin, Video, Board Cover, and Profile Dimensions

Pinterest crops, scales, and re-encodes almost everything you upload. Get the dimensions wrong and your pin gets cut off in the feed, blurred in the grid, or rejected outright as a video. Get them right and Pinterest shows the image exactly as you intended on every screen size.
This is a reference page for all the sizes that matter in 2026: what to upload, what Pinterest turns it into, and how to find out the true resolution of a pin you're about to save. Pinterest publishes its official specs on the product specs page; this guide explains what those numbers mean in practice.
The One Ratio to Remember: 2:3
Standard pins are displayed in a vertical grid, and Pinterest's recommended aspect ratio is 2:3. The canonical upload size is 1000 × 1500 pixels. Anything with that ratio, from 600 × 900 to 2000 × 3000, displays correctly.
Why 2:3 specifically:
- Pinterest's feed columns are a fixed width, and height is what varies. A 2:3 image gets the most vertical space without being truncated.
- Taller pins (like the old 1:2.1 "giraffe pins") are now cut off in the home feed. Pinterest shows a cropped preview and the full image only when the pin is opened.
- Square 1:1 images work but look small in the grid next to 2:3 neighbours, so they get fewer clicks.
If you're downloading pins rather than creating them, the ratio tells you something useful: an image that arrives as 736 × 1104 is the feed-size version of a 2:3 pin, and there's almost certainly a larger original behind it. See the section on checking resolution below.

Standard Pins in Detail
Upload: 1000 × 1500 px, JPEG or PNG, under 20 MB. PNG keeps text and flat colours crisp; JPEG is smaller for photographs.
What Pinterest does with it: the upload is stored as the originals file, and Pinterest generates a set of scaled copies for different contexts. The ones you'll encounter in URLs are 236 px, 474 px, 736 px, and 1200 px wide, each with the height scaled proportionally. The feed uses 236 or 474 depending on the device; the pin close-up uses 736 or 1200; the original is served only when someone specifically requests it.
Text on pins: keep text within the middle 80% of the image. The feed preview crops a little from the top and bottom on some screen sizes, and the bottom strip is partly covered by the pin's title and profile row in the app.
Safe zones: Pinterest overlays a save button in the top-right corner of every pin on hover. Don't put anything important there.
Video Pin Sizes
Video pins are the format Pinterest has been pushing hardest since 2024, and they have stricter requirements than images:
- Ratio: 9:16 vertical is preferred. 1:1 and 2:3 are accepted. Horizontal 16:9 uploads work but display with large empty margins.
- Resolution: 1080 × 1920 px is the standard. Pinterest accepts up to 4K but transcodes everything down for delivery.
- Length: minimum 4 seconds, maximum 15 minutes for organic pins.
- File size: up to 2 GB.
- Format: MP4, MOV, or M4V. H.264 encoding is the safest choice.
- Frame rate: 24 to 30 fps. 60 fps uploads get converted.
When you download a video pin through PinLoad, the file you get is Pinterest's transcoded MP4, usually 720p or 1080p depending on what the uploader provided. Our guide on downloading Pinterest videos explains the quality tiers, and the posting guide covers how to upload one that keeps its quality.
Board Covers and Profile Images
Board covers aren't uploaded separately; you pick one of the board's pins and Pinterest crops a square from its centre. If the pin you want as a cover is 2:3, the top and bottom are trimmed, so choose a pin whose subject sits in the middle. To change a cover: open the board, click the pencil icon, and use Board cover → Change.
Profile photos display at a small size (about 165 px on desktop, smaller on mobile), but upload something larger, 400 × 400 or more, so it looks sharp on high-density screens. Pinterest crops to a circle, so keep faces or logos centred.
Profile covers were added as an optional banner across the top of business and personal profiles. 800 × 450 px is the spec; a video cover also works if it's under 30 seconds.
How to Check the Real Resolution of a Pin
Pinterest never tells you the dimensions of an image in the interface. Two ways to find out:
On desktop, before downloading:
- Open the pin close-up.
- Right-click the image and choose Open image in new tab.
- Look at the URL. If it contains
/736x/, you're seeing a scaled copy. Replace736xwithoriginalsand press Enter. - The browser tab title shows the dimensions, for example
image.jpg (2000×3000).
After downloading: paste the pin URL into PinLoad and the download will be the originals file. Open it in any image viewer and check the properties. On Mac, select the file and press Cmd+I; on Windows, right-click and choose Properties → Details.
The HD image guide goes into detail on why the save button inside Pinterest's own app gives you a smaller file than the original.
Why Downloaded Pins Are Sometimes Small
If the original the uploader provided was small, no downloader can make it larger. Common cases:
- Repinned from a website at whatever size the site served. Many blog images are 800 px wide or less.
- Uploaded from a phone screenshot, which caps out at the phone's screen resolution.
- Old pins from before Pinterest raised its recommended sizes.
If a pin is a low-resolution copy of a photo, tracing it back to the original photographer usually turns up a larger version. Our guide on finding the original source of a Pinterest image explains how.
Sizes for Pinterest Collages
Pinterest's collage tool (formerly the separate Shuffles app) composes cutouts onto a 2:3 canvas and exports the result as a standard pin at 1000 × 1500 px. Cutouts you add are stored at whatever resolution the source pin had, so a collage built from low-res pins will look soft when exported. Our collage guide covers the workflow end to end.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the maximum image size Pinterest allows?
20 MB per image file. There's no strict pixel limit, but very large uploads are downsized for storage. Anything above 3000 px on the long edge gains you nothing.
Does Pinterest compress images?
Yes. Every scaled copy is JPEG-compressed, including the copies of PNG uploads. The originals file is kept closer to what you uploaded, which is why it's the one worth downloading.
What size should I make a pin for a blog post?
1000 × 1500 px with the post title in the top two-thirds. Leave the bottom fifth free for the pin title overlay.
Are there different sizes for the Pinterest app vs desktop?
No. Pinterest generates the same set of scaled copies and picks the appropriate one per screen. Upload once at 1000 × 1500 and it works everywhere.
Why does my pin look blurry in the feed?
Usually because the upload was under 600 px wide and Pinterest had to scale it up for the 736 px feed slot. Re-upload at 1000 px or wider.
